How Business Consultants Can Help Your Company Succeed
Business Consulting is a hotbed of controversy and debate among small business owners. Some people are against it, while others love it. I have found that many times the problem lies in the fact that people are too focused on opinions to be able to make a decision based on hard cold facts.
My definition of a successful consulting relationship is a working relationship where both parties mutually benefit from the arrangement. The key is for the consultant to clearly communicate expectations in writing before the project begins so that there are no surprises later on. One important aspect of a successful consulting relationship is the ability to negotiate. Negotiation power should be at a maximum level when compared to the actual services offered by the small business consultant. The ideal percentage for consultants to negotiate is around 60%. If this number is not met, clients are unlikely to feel comfortable with the consultant and the consulting relationship will end in disappointment.
There are four key components to successful business consulting relationships. Clients must feel like they are being heard; clear communication must take place between the consultant and client; the consultant has established an effective rapport with the client; and the small business owner actually knows what the consultant is doing. Let’s look at these key points one at a time. Clients must feel like they are being heard clients who understand what the consulting relationship means and how it benefits them possess an advantage over those who do not. Clear communication takes place between the consultant and client; the consultant must demonstrate an understanding of the business model; the client needs to feel like the consultant has an effective understanding of their problem-solving needs; and the small business owner actually understands what the consultant is doing.
The second key component to successful business consulting relationships is solid communication. Effective communication requires detailed planning; regular on-going communication is essential; and the communication should lead to measurable results, tangible goals and an understanding of the desired impact or result. Communication occurs between the consultant and the client; this begins with the initial phone call. It continues through a series of phone conversations, emails and meetings designed to develop an understanding and to build trust.
The third critical component to successful business consulting relationships is solid web development. Most companies that engage in internet web design typically have an HR presence and for those companies, hiring an HR professional seems obvious. A good HR web developer/designer can coordinate HR tasks from the front office to the online support staff, assisting the business in providing quality customer service.
The fourth critical component is solid web development and that is especially important for a company that relies on technology to grow and help increase revenue. If your business relies on big data consulting, your employees need help in developing the information architecture necessary to use that big data to improve customer service, shorten response times and increase profit. The solution typically involves developing custom web solutions; however, you can save money by outsourcing your application development needs to a provider that offers integrated technology. The HR tech will be responsible for helping to train your employees to use the technology, training them in how to create the applications and train them in using the technology to help your business succeed.
